Recently I had the pleasure of talking to someone via phone throughout his very busy schedule with work and personal life, about their experience in an industry that I personally know but also wanted to know more of the industry that he works in. This person is Jake Flannigan who is employed by the Chicago Sports News based out of Chicago Illinois. I knew that when I choose to speak with him that it would be one conversation that he would give me great advice and also motivation for my future in whatever portion of the Sports Entertainment Industry I would choose to be a part of. When I asked his experience for negotiating in the industry that he is placed in, he responded with his personal experience of negotiating is for his own personal contract with the network that he works with. He had to make a contract with the company of how many nights a week, pay, years, and different things that he would be doing in the position. He had started off with just being someone that wrote short news pieces for the local news in the area and kept moving up by requesting to be placed on bigger jobs that would put him up to being a sports newscaster in the area. When asked the tips for success the biggest piece of advice that was given to me from him was to make sure that I am diligent on trying to better my knowledge on the area that I prefer to be involved in. Along with this, continue to show your employer that you are wanting to move farther up but doing the small things, volunteer for anything and everything that you can, and make sure that you watch the sports or at least get alerts about all the popular games happening because if you don’t, your setting yourself up for failure.

As companies go daily to look for a CEO when starting a new company, you have many qualities that are needed for them to handle the pressures of the everyday business world. It’s not easy starting a new company and in today’s world, many companies tend to fail just in the first year along without the proper guidance when it is needed. Having a new startup company is hard, it takes a lot of time and effort not only on the employees but also on the CEO. Finding that right person has to be one that is also a person that has sympathy and care for people that the new ones to the industry so they can teach them while the company grows throughout the years. Some of the key qualities is that they need to most obviously is to work well under pressure, stay organized, to have knowledge as to what is going on in the industry, and to understand how to properly manage teams and a company. Putting these into the form of a job description is very critical because it will show already what they know about being the one in charge, the one that is going to have the weight of the company on their shoulders, and also how much work that starting a new company is. If placing these in the job description I would place them as needing someone that is highly motivated, looking for a challenge but has the understanding of patience, will stay dedicated even during hard times, and will work with a team properly while learning the employees and their strengths while showing them the key importance of the industry and what works and does not work for many companies in the same industry. With having the qualities in front and center, you will have the proper person for the job and can weed out the ones that won’t be the proper fit for the company.
